Project Information
These are the Slimline's that I have done this last week. The 1st pen gun metal hardware with a Cedar blank. I love the smell when you turn Cedar, the wife says the shop smells like a hampster bedding but I love the smell.
The 2nd one is satin chrome hardware with a white w/ black swirl acrylic.
3rd pen is a gold fancy slimline. The blank I got from a friend that sells bowl & pen blanks and said that he had cut down this tree and did't know what kind of wood it was. Took a sample to 3 different colleges including UF and USF and also took the sample to the Foresty Division and no one could find out what the spieces was. He cut it down from a the yard of a lady that was a widow of a WWII vet. She said she think he brought a seed from over seas when he was in the war and planted it in his front yard when he got back. It was over 40 yrs old when he cut it down. We call it Mystery Wood. It has a pretty grain to it.
4th pen is a Bird's Eye Maple. I saw in a pen turning book I have that you take a Slimeline kit and make it to look like a designer pen. You just cut the bottom blank a little longer and then on the top blank make some burn marks to give it a centerband look. I like it because it gives the Slimeline kit a little different look.
The last pen is done the same way as the 4th pen. This pen blank is made from Figured Oak. Has some nice grain pattern in it.
All the pens have been sanded to 600 grit followed by 6 coats of BLO/CA then buffed to 12,000 and finished off with 3 coats of Myland's Friction Polish. All feedback is welcome good or bad. Thanks for looking.
