Project Information

This is a Murphy bed that was completed in September 2010 but some of the building pictures can be found in August . I call it the Smithsonian because "Smith" was the name of the customer I first designed this one for. Normally this one has a desk that folds out of the desk but this customer didn't choose to have that option. Also they changed up the drawers on the bottom to an all door look.

The order was originally for one bookcase. They added the second one after I was finished with it.

The sofa was designed without any arms as the customer requested and with a fabric they selected.

This one also has inset bookcases. I normally use them when the customer need the sofa and bookcases on the side. The space for the inset bookcases allow the arms to be in a dead area so that both the bed and drawers work. This one didn't actually need them for that reason but was a nice addition.

This is the first of two beds I built for this customer. I just finished up the second one and working on a LARGE interior pocket door. This door will be 96"h x 48"w x 1 5/16" Thick. I'll post the other projects when my posting catches up.

Very interesting!! It looks great, but where does the sofa go, does it fold under the bed, and how does the
bed open? The answers might be in your video, but all I could get to play were the ads which I killed. Thanks
for sharing and getting the curiosity bump going

The sofa stays in place. The cushions are removed and the bed folds over it. Also notice I have two different sofas in the pictures. In the showroom I took a picture with one because theirs were not finished.

The bed unlocks by lifting the legs on the two upper corners. This releases a lock. The bed is counterbalanced with pistons so you just have to slightly pull it down. BTW sorry about the ads. They drive me crazy too. It seems that my video supplier keeps adding more.

I like it. I was wondering how the sofa played into it. Great work!
