Project Information

The latest box influenced by the "Harlequin" work of Andrew Crawford. It measures 5" x 9" X 3" and is made of American Black Walnut and Maple. The diamonds are separated by a 1/32" strip of black veneer and the entire inlay panel is banded by a 3/16 band of Wenge. The bottom of the box has Wenge "lipping" both at the bottom and top to add interest and provide a hard edge. ( not that the walnut isn't hard enough; but I just thought it looked good ) The handle and the feet are also made from Wenge. It is hinged with a small jewelry box size piano hinge that is made with built in "stops" to hold the cover open just past 90º and it is lined with purple butter suede. The box liner and the tray are made from striped maple with a 1/16" band of wenge placed in the edge. The tray also sports corner keys of Wenge. The finish is 3 coats of Danish oil on the box, and 3 coats of Lacquer on the liner and tray. The Danish Oil is buffed to a nice lustre and the Lacquer is sanded with 800 grit . Seems like every project is a learning experience and can challenge one's patience, however the finished product should serve it's purpose well.

Dave,
Very, very nice one. Elegant detailing. I particularly like the lift shape ...nice fit with the overall design. Same for the base/feet. The harlequin work is the perfect complement. The contrast between the interior and exterior works really well. I like this box a lot.

Excellent job! This is a very classy box. The contrasting inlays in the lining and the tray are extra fancy.

That box has the magnet quality. It draws you in for a closer look! Very nice.
You mentioned piano hinges with built in stops….mind if I ask where you got those?
