Project Information

This is my first turned bowl and it's a project that has been in the making for a while, I turned the outside of the bowl a month or so ago but it was stuck on my lathe. The screw in faceplace I mounted the bowl with had no spots to secure a wrench easily to unscrew it and I couldn't muscle it off.

So I let it sit there for a while, eventually I had the idea of using some vice grips and a pipe used for pipeclamps to get some extra leverage and I was able to twist it off the lathe so I could mount the bowl chuck and turn the inside of the bowl.

The bowl is made from a purple heart bowl blank, and I varnished it with 6 coats of general finishes food safe finish. I used my carbide tipped turning tools exclusively in this and let me say they still rock. My sanding technique needs more work there where some rough spots I didn't catch until after I applied the first coat of varnish. I was able to smooth them out pretty easily though by the 4th coat of varnish so the whole bowl is smooth now I just think I should be able to catch those before hand.

Overall I'm happy with the bowl, and more importantly my cat is happy with it too.

Very nice bowl, even with a bit of adventure. Your cat is spoiled, I would have kept it for myself.

Did the smell of the finish bother your cat for feeding ? I was going to make one for a puppy , but was thinking about using mineral oil and beeswax on it.

I waited a few days after the bowl was done before starting to use it, I didn't apply wax because I was concerned it would smell or impart a taste in the food that my cat would detect. Cat's can be incredibly picky about these things and my cat took a few sniffs of the bowl to inspect it then chowed down his food :) so if it did have a smell it didn't bother him.
