Wood And Materials Used
Walnut, Red Gum, Danish Oil
Location
the "Loft"
This is a small box I made up to house a few layout tools for shipping. 13" x 4" x 3" high, made from Walnut. Started out with some 4/4 Walnut and resawed it and planed down to 1/4" thickness. Mitered corners, with a Red Gum angled spline. The Bottom is set in a dado and the top slides in a dado. I built up the end of the top for a solid joint since I beveled the top. I also used a small block of Red Gum to create a turn lock to hold the top closed. Finished with Danish Oil and Howards Feed n Wax.

Thanks for looking and comments always welcome.

The Awl and marking Knife were made previously.

Sleek looking box Eric. My favorite style for storing many things. It took me many years to figure out the turn lock and it improves it by 100%. Nice work.

Thanks, Dave. It took me a few tries to fit that correctly, this time I used a small brass nail, and sinched to end over on the inside, it needed something to stop it from sliding open. Thought about using a magnet just didn't think that would work well in this style.

Do you have any close up pictures of the locking mechanism?

No, I do not,,,,, What I did was shape a small block drilled a hole to fit the nail. located the center of the pin and pushed the nail in to make a mark, then drilled a small hole through the box end. After the nail was pushed through I bend the nail over and used a small hammer (carefully) to drive it into the inside of the box. Kind of like they did years ago when attaching planks on boat bottoms. I did have the nail head backed up on the anvil part of a bench vise.

Thanks, Dan. I have been adding that style top to my boxes lately. The lock was needed for that slide.

Great design and very well executed. Shop built tools in a shop built box. The only way to fly!
