Sliding Compound Miter Saw (SCMS) Station
An inexpensive but very functional SCMS station made from scrap wood and a give-away conference table.
My SCMS station is not fine art furniture but it works as good. Its design was determent from what I had available in the shop.
The table is a give-away conference table with 1inch melamine top, deep enough to hold my miter saw and 2 meters long. Has metallic legs and a metallic cross bar under its top, and to make it more sturdy I added cross shelve on its feet.
I like my station to be high so I raised it with some lumber to a table top height of 110cm (43').
The fence and platform was made out of plywood laminated with oak, and has 4 drawers to accommodate some of my tools and accessories.
The fence has a measuring tape on both sides and a piece of hardwood deck worked nicely as a stop block.

Its top hood is made out from 6mm (1/4') MDF with hinged sites so they can open and close accordingly.
My first idea for dust collection inside the hood was to use a floor sweeper but that did not go so well because the hood is very big and not enough suction was created there. The dust sweeper idea would function very nicely with a non sliding miter saw and some side slides to guide the dust to the mouth of the sweeper.
So I ended up cutting a rectangular hole to mount a big mouth dust hood.

It works fine, but every now and then I still have to use a brush for the left-over's.
An old vacuum hose served me fine to connect its top outlet to the 110mm (4' 3/8) ducting pipe.
Finally I cover the front of the Station's hood with plastic sheet for better vacuum and to keep the fine dust from coming out.
The station is nothing special but it will serve me well until it gets upgraded in the future.
