Project Information

After taking a break from building my Wife's built in cabinet I am back working on the shop (my favorite projects). I needed a place to store sheet stock and the rolling cart I had was just too top heavy, limited on space and cumbersome to move. I had seen others store their sheets vertically and that fit well with my shop layout. It's not fancy but works well and saves a ton of space. I decided to add some shelf storage on one side facing my work area for paint, stain, and other finishes.

Thanks Steve. I added a 1×2 strip at the bottom of each sheet of the verticals to increase their overall length by 1 1/2 inches. I used pocket screws but you could attach them multiple ways. The multi-purpose cubbies were actually the result of poor planning. I originally intended the storage unit to be on casters allowing me to "park it" flat against the wall and then rotate it out to pull stock. With it flat I could access the small compartments from either end. I had the small sections open from both ends. Unfortunately, ceiling height wouldn't allow the size casters required to handle the weight. This forced me to position the unit stationary as you see pictured. I hated the thought of the back half of the small board section being wasted space and inaccessible so I decided to create the cubbies. Each one is the same space as the three openings on the visible end and about 8 inches deep. The overall unit is 24" wide with the three compartments evenly spaced. Height wise the same, 96" overall evenly divided into three compartments, so around 32". I simply used my jig saw to cut the opening for the cubbies and then cleaned them up with the router. The openings allow for about 2" lip all the way around, so the openings are about 20×28. My poor planning has actually worked out really well. I love the storage space and it is actually better utilization of space then more small board capacity.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks David, yes 5 sheets of 3/4 ply. I used pocket screws on the 1×2 additions to the full sheets to extend the height. It offered more gripping than screwing into the end of the ply. Everywhere else I simply glued screwed thru the verticals into the cross members.

Rick,
Could I trouble you for a clarification on the 1X2 additions? where are they exactly?..

I'm going to go build one just like this one…

Thank you!

David,

If you are intending to store full length plywood sheets you will need to extend the lengths of the vertical dividers to allow full sheets to slide in. If you simply used 4×8 sheets as dividers without extension then your compartment would be 8' tall and your 8' ply sheet would not go in (except if it is angled). I added a 1×2 board on the ends of the dividers to increase my compartment heights by 1 1/2" allowing full sheets to slide in easily. If you want to private email your email address I can send you a photo which should help clear it up.

Good luck with the build. I am happy to answer any questions.

Hi Rick,

Great compact idea for a lot of storage~! I've been looking & looking for a design that would fit my needs and I think this is going to be it.

Is the base made of "2-by" stock or is it just a plywood bottom? It appears thicker than 3/4".

Thank you…..AndyMB

Andy, thanks. Yes, the base is 2×4 and then the 3/4 ply laid on top. The 2x is not necessary if sitting stationary on the floor. Originally I had thought about putting some casters under the unit and pivot it against the wall for space savings. Head height turned out to be a problem so gave up that idea.

I know this is an old AWESOME thread :)
Planning to build this out next week - So I was just wondering, now that this has been in use for awhile, what would you change if anything?

Thanks
Bill

Rick,
This is a great layout and I know it is an old post, but it is really well done. I would love to see some additional pictures of the base and compartment details.

Hi Bob,

Thank you for the kind words. I have attached a few more photos but if there is something specific let me know. Previous posts answered many questions regarding the build and the sizes of compartments and shelving section but I'm happy to fill in any gaps.

Regards,
Rick

Rick - Thank you for the additional pics, they help a lot and will hopefully help the next guy. I really like what you have done, and will be making my own version (facing the opposite way).
