Project Information

A pair of Shaker style nightstands. I was building these for spec, so I decided to have one painted to showcase the different options, one is solid cherry, one is painted with Old Fashioned Milk Paint pitch black. Features tapered legs, mortise and tenon joinery, hand cut dovetails, and finished all surfaces with smoothing plane. The drawer pulls were turned from 8/4 cherry on the drill press…I have no lathe yet so I used Christian Becksvoort's method.
Cherry has become more and more of a joy for me to work with as I progress in skills and especially since I have honed my sharpening (no pun intended).
These drawers ended up putting me only over 100 finished dovetails for the year, so I'm a little behind. These are also the first projects I completed after getting my new tablesaw in the shop.

Thanks everyone! These are really fun to build a great way to try out new techniques for mortise and tenons. I have to build another solid cherry one now so I can have a matching set in the bedroom.

Nice work, beautiful jointery. How did you finish it.

Dave, finished with a linseed oil and beeswax mixture I cooked up based on info from Chris Schwarz. Really easy to apply, and even did a coat over the milk paint with it. It's nice to use VOC finishes when I can.
