Project Information

My wife has been hounding me for seven years to make her some Shaker Oval Boxes. So, finally for her birthday this past year I made them. They are made from quartersawn cherry and finished with boiled linseed oil and wax. I cheated a bit and made them from a kit from Lee Valley. That kit was great and well worth the extra money.

If you've never made them before, one warning-expect to buy a whole lot of extra stuff just to make these! You have to find a container large enough to boil the wood in for bending, you have to make shapers and cores, you absolutely must have a sanding station with a belt sander and a disc sander. Long story short, don't just make three. It is just as much work to make three as it is to make ten. If I make any more of these it should go much more quickly. But this was by far the most complicated woodworking project I've attempted. They're not perfect, but she liked them.

Those are on my todo list also.
Good job, and thanks for the pointers.

I made a set of 5 at a class with Dale Barnard in Paoli, IN earlier this year. I agree, lots of fun and more work than they appear.
