Project Information

Been wanting to make some fancier or should I say more complicated treads for my models.
The jig I had been using finally died after many a wheel build so got to work making a new one and ended up making two.
One for strait treads that is able to cut 3 or more tires at a time to save time.
I make a lot more regular tires for trucks so once I saw that there would need to be changes in the angle making tread jig I was going to build I just left this one alone and started a new angle cutting jig.

Then an angle maker for those nice modern looking car tires.

This jig is set up for easy angle changes as different models need different angles to get the look needed.

Here's my strait wheel making jig blog.

And here's the angled blog.
I should add that with the angled tread jig you can make both strait and angled treads.

And an extra blog on making the tyres.

Here I need to add that both Dutchy and I have many more blogs on model building and there are so many more that I keep finding everyday here on Lumber jocks from way back..

I would like to add that over the last two or more years this site has helped me to build things I would have never dreamed of before finding this site, and it's by standing on the shoulders of others that we can learn and build great things for us and our loved ones.

Superb, nice wheels. Interesting jig. An advantage on having a large indexing disc. More accurate i think. Will have to check out the blogs more to see how it works, from the picture I am not sure. Well done. I thought you used the bandsaw for the cuts from one of your blogs. When I get time have plan in my head to adapt my indexing discs to cut wheels on the bandsaw.

Bushmaster I tried the band saw and switched to the table saw after those first set for cleaner cuts using a 7 1/4" dewalt saw blade.
I don't have your tools to build a better indexer so did the best I could.

Thanks friend for naming me.

I never have made such beautiful wheels as shown above. So there is work to do :)

I need to add here that now that my wheels are getting so complicated a very precise indexer is a must.
The treads really needs to match up all the way around and they just won't look right if even one hole in the indexer is'nt where it should be.
This isn't to much of a problem with the strait treads but it really shows up when you start adding in the angled treads, but Oo MY they really add to the look.
That's why I'm loving the work Bushmasters doing with his jigs, been giving me ideas I hadn't had a chance to come up with yet.

I know what you mean Hunter71 when you have to build 12 wheels it gets old quick, that's why I've been working so hard to come up with a quicker easier way to get a nice tyre and wheel with out all the work.
I want a hand made one off look with a mass produced speed. lol

The funny thing is I just build them for myself but have a case of the lazy's and want a great look with out all the work. LOL
Plus I just love figuring out a new jig, their really more fun than a project to me.

These are beautiful. The only way I get treads is when the roundover bit catches on endgrain…

What blade do you use to cut the treads (TPI)?

My latest blade
Look at Post 13

Looking for a thinner one but so far this is the winner.

I wish and need to add all my tire ideas and posts in one area to make things easier to find.
As I have progressed on my tread and tire making ways [over the last 2 years] I have always left things out from one tire build to the next thinking [this has been covered by me, Dutchy or ???] they could be easily found by looking back at past posts but now these needed posts can be way back and buried.

I guess for now the info is here there and every where on this site a good search can find most of it but you got to do your home work, and as Ducky says we hate to read so look at all the pretty pictures. LOL
