Project Information

I wasn't going to enter the "serving tray" category of our Summer '08 Awards event, but then I saw GaryK project and was reminded that the point of the challenges is to inspire us to improve our own skills (well, that's how I interpret them anyway).

This tray was made 420 days ago back when I knew, oh, not much about woodworking. I had just purchased my DowelMax to help with joinery and this was a practice piece. The cedar pieces are not as thick as the pine, thus leaving a place for fingers to reach in and pick the tray up.

I use the tray all the time and always get positive feedback about it. That always surprises me because it is simply a piece of pine with cedar attached to the ends of it.

It was fun looking back and reading my "learning curve journey". I tried: I conquered :)

(Interesting to read that this was intended as a birthday present for someone. Oops. I wonder what they got instead! ha)

Very nice Debbie, I can see why you kept it for yourself

Who said that pine wasn't nice wood, its beautiful.

The walnut, & pine look great together.

It was also fun looking at my peg faceting videos.

I haven't thought about them for a long time.

GOOD LUCK!

Debbie, I think it is absolutely beautiful the way you inlaid those darker pieces of wood to look just like knots! Gary has nothing on you! :)

As they say, it's an honor just to compete. The great part is that we can all get in the same game as Gary. Maybe not the same universe, but the same game. I'm glad you threw your hat, or tray, in the ring.

I had to calculate the timeline and yes, now I remember… the birthday was my neighbour's and I whipped up a box for her and gave that to her instead.

Yes, Russel… life is not about "winning" but about participating. I'm participating!! :)

Charlie: oh yes, those inlay pieces seemed to take YEARS and YEARS to create! :)
