Self Portrait toy

This is a self portrait I made for a school assignment. I did not really have any plan when I started this, I just started carving the head, and worked down from there. originally it was going to be many different materials, with just wood hands, but i wanted to challenge myself, and try to make the whole thing out of wood and cork. The head is carved from a 200 year old piece of pine that was reclaimed from a local victorian house. The chest is a pine scrap. The tops of the arms, and the hips are tulip wood (which was a pain to carve). The legs and forearms are cherry. Hands and feet are carved from industrial pressed cork. The dreads are actually wool that I roved into individual dreadlocks, similar to the way real ones are made, there are 56 all together. The red bandana was given to me by my grandfather. The earrings are small glass plugs i cut from window glass. Finally the whole thing is held together by walnut dowels, and finished with wax.

Part 2 of the assignment was an environment for my toy. So I made a miniature workshop for my guy, complete with a mahogany floor and bench top that was done with quarter inch strips. some miniature rough sawn lumber cut from my yard is stacked up on the side. I also made a miniature peg board frame, and rustic shelf, along with various miniature tools. Painted with the same paint as my studio. and the roof is a bandana stretched over a piece of hardboard trimmed with mahogany on the underside.
