Project Information

This is my first attempt at this technique. Its really hard. My respect for the box sculptors on this site has more than doubled overnight.

The box is maple with a cherry insert on the lid. Its about3-1\2 inch square. The grooves were done with a grinder with a sanding disk. It was old and dull and caused the burning. I do think it kind of adds to the effect. So I left it. Finished with a tinted danish oil. I named it 'Nightmare'

Thank you for looking and comments is welcomed.

Ps. Between my iPhone and my tablet I cannot get the pictures to rotate. Apologies.

Great looking box, I have wanted to try this style of woodworking for sometime. I was sure that many of the Masters on here made it look easy! Way to go.

Very fine first attempt at sculpting…the burning from the grinder adds a nice effect also.

I have always wanted to try this ever since I put a cedar box against a wire wheel. That worked out well, though I didn't quite get the results I expected.

Great job on your first sculpted box … Greg is the master here, but I have tried this and learned two things.

1) I quit using 3/4" material and now use 1/2" stock as it makes the box appear more delicate and proportional.

2) I burnt a lot of wood before discovering a 50 grit sanding disc. My grinder came with about 10 discs of various sort, all burnt and scorched the wood. (they were all made for grinding metal … DUH)

My boxes look like someone took a nice box and butchered it with an angle grinder … You and Greg have a talent to make the waves look like they belong there.

Actually it looks pretty darn cool. I desperately want to try this but I currently have too many projects on the list and checking off the list has slowed to a crawl. I hate winter.

I think you got the Greg gene that I lack! That sculpting is nice. And the burning does add to the look.
