Project Information
My wife is an elementary age (grades 3-5) science teacher at a private school in Massachusetts. This summer she was able to get an augmented reality sandbox for the school. Last weekend while helping her get it set up and calibrated I realized that it would be helpful for her to have a screed to flatten the sand when needed. I headed off to the local blue big box store to get some clear pine but, as I usually do, I stopped at the maple section to see if they had any special boards. Just so happens that they had a very nice curly maple board just the right size. It cost about $10 more than the pine I had in my hand so I put the pine back and took the maple home.
This project was done with hand tools except for the thickness planning required to get it down to 1/2". Final dimensions are about 30" x 5 1/2" x 1/2".
It's finished with a heated combination of BLO and bees wax.
I made the handle hole a little longer than I normally would have thinking that the kids may want to use two hands.
She brought it in to school today and I am waiting to see if it works well for the kids.
