Project Information

This ash bowl cracked in four different places before it was even finished, so I made it an experimental bowl. All the patterns began as doodling, and slowly morphed into some kind of crazy tribal tattoo. I had intended to completely blacken the inside of the bowl with a torch, but I noticed that the grain lines blackened very quickly and made that cool black and tan effect. I think I have a new favorite bowl.

12 inches across and finished with walnut oil and beeswax.

Cool! I just love stuff like this… no particular pattern or predetermined design, just do what looks right at the time and the result is truly a piece of the artist. That's a really handsome bowl.

Extremely unique and very pretty!

Where is the popcorn?

I have used a "torch effect" for several decades on some things! Yes, it can "pop" a grain pattern right out!

Not sure my husband will let me near a blowtorch anytime soon, but I would love to try this sometime. Beautiful project.
