Project Information

This wood spirit carving is hand-carved in a piece of Sassafras driftwood. This is a very large carving that makes quite a statement hanging on the wall.

This piece is 21" tall, 5 1/2" wide and 4" thick.

I carved this fella' and his mushroom hitchhikers using rotary hand tools (similar to those of a dentist). I used an oil stain to finish the carving and accentuate the details.

Josh,

Has a different feel. I like it. Have you ever thought about a carving/sculpture of someone you know?

Thanks, guys!

Tom, I have carved likenesses of real people, but never anyone that I know. I don't really like the idea of carving real people. I like for the character to emerge from the wood and be a real part of the wood- just my preference :)

Thanks so much, Charles! They're going to keep getting better :)

I carve some animals, Tom, typically with a chainsaw or in pierced relief. You'll be seeing more!

He kinda looks like Orson Wells. I love the way you can't seem to let well enough alone (mushroom hitch hikers?).
Speaking of which. Was there something extra in the top pf the Jack Nicholson piece?

Thanks, Mark! I'm still improving… Everyday :) And I am very grateful!

I didn't intentionally put anything extra in the Jack Nicholson piece…doesn't mean something isn't there, though…

Nicely turned, Sir.

I am a huge fan of Netsuke. Many, many, MANY failures before I, finally, captured the piece hiding just under the surface of a chunk of wood.

Thanks, Richard! Lots of failures…That's for sure, brother :) But all of the failures really aren't failures at all….You know that, though :)
