Project Information
Several in our local turning club use the Arbortech Contour Sander. For those not familiar with it, this device turns a standard angle grinder into a random orbit sander with a 50mm rubber backing pad that can be used with PSA sanding discs.
The Arbortech is a terrific device, but I haven't been able to find replacement discs at our local woodworking supply stores, and ordering online results in shipping costs and several days waiting for new discs. The discs are sold in packs of 25 at a cost of $8.95, or about .36-cents apiece.
A couple of my fellow turners came up with an alternative … 6" PSA disc from Harbor Freight. If you get 4 discs for the Arbortech from each 6" PSA disc, your end cost per disc is about .09 cents.
I use an inexpensive hole saw ($2.89 at Menards), and a plywood jig. The recess in the bottom of the jig accommodates 5 of the 6" PSA discs, and yields 20 discs that cane be used with the Arbortech.
