I saw this design on TWW and decided to try it. We really like using sea salt flakes at the table, and taking a pinch out of a salt cellar makes a lot more sense than a salt grinder.
I cut a solid bubinga bowl blank on the bandsaw with the table tilted at an angle. Then after slicing the lid off, I hollowed the cellar out with a forstner bit and a bottom-finishing bit in my router. The lid is held on with a Euro bolt and a threaded insert. The whole cellar was finished with Watco Danish Oil, with a coat of Ren Wax on the outside.
BTW, these pictures were taken after almost a year's worth of daily use (and sometimes abuse).
