Project Information

A pair of salt boxes (or "wall salts", or "salt pigs") made from oak, rebate and nail construction. The oak was a single 2 foot long oak 2×4, given to each member of our woodworking guild as a build challenge. The bottom was grooved first with a plow plane, to take the base, then it was cut up, rebated for the joints, and nailed with brass nails (to avoid staining the oak). The hinges are shaped into the side, hinging on brass pins (screws with the head cut off).

I was rushing to get on a plane the next morning, so they just got one coat of boiled linseed oil.

Those look great Craig.
I really like your brass screw/hinge idea.
I have to borrow that tip.

Thank you for sharing.

And Craig, no more 500 day waits between projects.
I'm getting too old to wait to see your nice work ! lol

In that case Woodwrecker, make the round bits on the sides a little large than I did. I had in my head that they had to have the same diameter as the thickness of the lid, which of course isn't correct. The screw has to go through at half the thickness of the lid, but the semi-circle above it can be any size. Make it a bit bigger so that there's a bit more wood there to avoid breakages. I think mine is strong enough, just, but only because it's oak. I'd have preferred a bit more meat there.

Very nice, looks cool, I don't think it should get anymore than just the BOL, it looks perfect the way it is.
