I decided a while back to try my hand at a craft show next Christmas. I thought that I could do small production runs of various small items that can be bought inexpensively. These salt and pepper shakers (7 sets), bottle balancers (12), and bookmarks (over 40 so far) are the first projects that got created. I was going to use plastic caps on the shaker, but found some properly-sized real corks at a dollar store and loaded up. I cut them down to size. I really like the fact that they're now all wood. "We don't need no steenking plastics".
I saw so many bottle balancers on Lumberjocks, I had to try. It's great that once you know the formula for placing the hole. After that, they are dirt easy to make, and are a great conversation piece.
The bookmarks are a big hit already. You clip a few pages with them and you'll never lose your bookmark. The different woods allow folks to pick what suits them. I just mix and match them. Some lady at work just asked for 12 of them. I can't take credit for this design. I saw it somehwere on the net and it stuck in my head for months before I got down to making some. I built the Wood mag small parts jig for the table saw to help make the thin cuts. Very helpful for a project like this.
Just been using tung oil and buffed wax with the Beall system for the finish on all these.
