Project Information

I am not sure if this falls under the woodworking projects umbrella but… it involved a ton of wood and it was definitely work.

My Dad and I have been building this hunting cabin for quite some time.

The pine trees that were used for the porch columns, rafters, ridge poles and main beam were harvested from our property. There were countless days clutching a chainsaw and/or draw knife.

The ridge poles are 24 feet long. Most of the joinery is half-lap dados cut with a chainsaw.

The siding was cut on a woodmizer sawmill.

The maple floor came from an old-school gymnasium. The free throw lines were still on the floor before making trip to Home Depot to rent a floor sander.

All told, it has cost less than 5k in materials.

This has become the preferred family gathering place.

It's funny how a little spot in the woods can bring people together.

I'll put this in my book of never-seen-befores. It's weird to see the roof on before the walls. Cool. For less then 5k I wish I had it.

Thanks for all the encouraging comments. My dad and I have been working on this a couple of weekends a month for the last 2 years.

We plan to cover at least part of the back deck and may expand the back another 10-15 feet. The front porch faces south so the back deck is shaded a good portion of the day. We spend 90% of waking time outdoors when we are there so outdoor space was pretty important.

Yes it did look a little strange with a roof and no walls. We wanted to get the rafters and sub floors protected from the elements as soon as possible and needed a covered area for camping.

I will post some more pictures when we get the interior finished.

I'd want to live there and take a week or two off each year to go work. Very nice.

toolman77,

I first saw this project you and your Dad built after I read your review of your Grizzly GO555X bandsaw. The cabin looks great! It looks like the perfect place to relax and get away from all of the "every day" problems of life. I hope you and your family have many wonderful times together at the cabin.
