Project Information

This is my take on Roubo's popular bookstand.

It's my first attempt and made from Meranti (Pacific Maple). I adjusted the dimensions of the design to suit the dimensions of my left-over stock, 185mm wide.

I did some drawings trying to match some of the Queen Anne style furniture already in my daughter's room, hence the legs. The hinge is as per Roubo's design which I was interested to learn is more than 200 years old.

Stained with walnut coloured dye, finished with a coat of Boiled Linseed Oil then a few coats of shellac. My 5 yo daughter wanted to help me with the shellac so I let her paint on three coats - it's left the finish a bit inconsistent but it was worth it having her so keen and involved.

Beautiful styling. Do you have any further sketches or photos of the hinge section, it looks like the shipwright hinge I've been experimenting with recently.

Great job! I've been wanting to build one of these, the hinges intrigue me.
