Project Information

My offering to the 2018 Mallet Swap.
This was undertaken with an idea to avoid using glue and allow the tool to be taken apart.

This is my take on wedging the handle to the mallet head. Only these wedges are not glued into the handle, but can be knocked out to allow the tool to be disassembled for storage or what have you.

The mallet head is made of Burmese Rosewood - Dalbergia oliveri - Janka hardness 2,710
The handle is made of Honduran Rosewood - Dalbergia stevonsonii - Janka hardness 2,200.
The wedges are African Ebony wood - Diospyros crasiflora - Janka hardness 3,080.

This went to Tony, aka Gr8hunter. I stamped his intials TW into the tip of the handle. I stamped a T and B into the top and bottom wedge, since they are different sizes.

Finished with Danish Oil and Paste finishing wax.

I am looking forward to working more with Rosewood, ebony and wedges!

Lovely work Joseph! I love that you came up with a challenge to tackle in making a "knockdown" mallet. The wood choices are gorgeous as is the attention to details. The top of the handle sculpting is beautiful.

This really is a cool mallet and the details are definitely well done. The idea is unique as well. Wood choices are fantastic and the overall product is stellar. Extremely well done Joseph. Tony can't complain about a whacker like that.

Joe, beautiful mallet. It's an elegant beast. I really love the rosewood and ebony combination and the rosette carved on the top of the handle. Lots of little details to take in if you look closely. That was thinking outside the box and executed flawlessly. Nice work.

Hey tony, you deserve a nice whacker that will last. I actually love a mallet that has dings and cracks and shows wear and tear. In my experience, Rosewood ages very well, (based on my vintage stanley handplane and layout tools).

The wood is rough hobby boards of Sycamore and bookmatched slices of Redwood burl which came from THIS monster.

Here is a rather frightening example of a bookmatch from that hunk of burl.

Here is the quartersawn Sycamore. This came from the base of the tree and it was dark and brownish purple! The upper part of the trunk was normal coloring, like a tan with reddish rays.

glad you enjoy it. I did my best to make it special.

Joseph I hope you don't mind me posting this. It's on your instagram page at your link. Shows the top detail much better and also Tony's initials that you carved on the top. Beautiful work!

Love the mallet, looks strong.

That bookmatch looks like a demented Rudolph the red nose, done as a Rorschach. Like that too.

That is a busy Sycamore, nice wood stash.

Thanks for posting
