Did you use plywood or MDF for the board? What surface prep did you do before painting it?

Derek, I used 1/2" MDF that I got at a recycled building products center. I didn't do any surface prep because It was already very smooth to begin with. I just poured on the paint and spread it thin with a paint roller. Thanks, Marty and Jay. Marty, is there going to be a theme for your next one?

At least you're not afraid to have it come out less than perfect. That is where I would fall down, always looking for that very clean line and fair curve, and becoming discouraged with early poor results.
I notice your pyrography being shaky at some points and quite smooth and flowing at others. But what we most often see is the overall expression and yours turned out fine. You've done rather nicely with limited resources. Chalk it up to determination?

Gene, I chalk it up to a friend/customer wanting something specific and myself delivering upon that request. I possess an odd dichotomy; I am a perfectionist but I also accept mediocrity. My wood burner didn't want to cut through the growth rings but followed the course of an undulating wave, up and down, up and down. I wonder if my wood burner just didn't get hot enough to make a pleasing, even line.
