Project Information

...no, not the green kind of dough.

A few weeks ago, a neighbor down the street had an old crib that she was getting rid of. Evidently, it was not safe for re-sale and wanted to know if I was interested in it. "Of course"....I hate to see wood go to waste. After busting it down into pieces - it was decision time. There was some nice maple underneath all of that finish.

So, I turned a couple of the spindles on the lathe into french rolling pins. Actually, I should say "we" since my son played an active part in the production - he's the prince of sanding. And loves to vacuum up sawdust!

Pretty simple project but the best part was spending some quality time in the shop with my boy.

Nice rolling pins!

I really like the shape. What finish did you use?

I really like these types of rolling pins (rather than the ones with the handles, etc). Easy to make, and very functional!

Great job, great project and especially, great helper.
Looking forward to seeing some of your shop pictures. It looks nice from the project page.
You said 522 days ago you'd post some after you clean it up. How dirty is that shop ?? LOL

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the nice comments! We enjoyed working on these projects together.

Lew - the pins were sanded down to 220 grit and then added a little boiled linseed oil to bring out the grain a little. The pins ended up with a 1-5/8" diameter, tapering to 1-1/4" at the ends with an overall length of 20-1/4". This was kinda driven by the size of the original piece but seems to work out alright. I don't think there's any set size for these.

Eric - Yes, you busted me. My son has done a great job of cleaning up the sawdust but the dad (me) still needs to get stuff put away, hung up, off the workbench, blah, blah, blah. It'll get done….and pix will be posted as proof (one day). ;-)

Nice!!! My wife is in pastry school and has been begging me for a couple of these. After seeing yours I think I'm gonna have turn a couple of them for her.

I love the comments about your son helping. My boys (8&9) are always helping me out in the workshop. It is great they even fight over who gets to Vacuum!!! LOL in 5 years I think that might be different so I'm enjoying it while I can. Glad to hear you are getting in some quality time. There is nothing in the world better than spending time with my boys.
