Beautiful and unique! I made some banding a while back and haven't used it yet. You have inspired me! You should keep "Olie" in the family. It is too cool to send out into the cold cruel world.

You should charge more…you both do wonderful work. Be proud of your work and people will be proud to own it. It all starts with you, you do great work so don't give away, uless its a gift. The finish turned out great, I love it.

Douglas, I like everything about this box. Particularly the motivation of experimenting with design ideas.

Personally, I think it would look better to have left the checkerboard banding out of this one, but then, according to your explanation, that s the reason for the box in the first place. So, I'm fine with that because without it, the box might not have been created, and that would be sad - I just love small wooden boxes!

One other suggestion; I feel the breadboard pin at each end of the lid looks rather lonely. What do you think about the idea of placing three pins along each end? The center pin is inserted and glued into a snug hole, the outside two would be inserted into snug holes in the breadboard end portion, but through elongated holes in the tenon to allow for movement.

Hope you don't mid my observations, they are not intended to be criticisms, just another perspective.

I would like more detail, perhaps a few close-ups shots of the lock escutcheon.

Here you go, Don. It's just a face grain turned rosette, cut off at about 115° at about 75% of full diameter. I drilled a hole large enough to admit the key shank, and then used a square file to file out the "flag" portion of the key (for want of the proper term).

I'll bear in mind your design thoughts, but on my end "he" would have looked more like a spider with six eyes.
I'm just enjoying the happy accident of the little face.

I see what you mean, guess I'm a little slow - I didn't see the smiley face previously. I was looking at the front of the box and failed to include the top in that view. Yes I suppose six eyes would have been four too many. LOL.

Don't worry Don, I didn't see the face either, which is odd because we (humans) are pre-disposed to see faces everywhere (electrical outlets, windows on a house….) I got the character reference - such a great illustrator - but must have thought it pertained to the acorn itself.

I just zoomed in farther on the picture I posted. There isn't much more to be seen, unfortunately. I have a lame little screw-on different heads soldering wand thingy from Woodcraft so there is not the detail on the acorn cap that I would have liked. All I did was was burn about six radii out from the tenon in the center to the circumferential burn line that delineates the cap from the nut itself. No glorious scales or cross-hatching.

Holy cow, Douglas! Just an awesome box. The detail is just wonderful!
