Brody,
I basically made a 12 segment frame and glued it onto a round blank of Mahogany that I cut on my bandsaw.
then turned it on the lathe.

Vince, I am new to Lumberjocks and appreciate your comments about my work. I like this platter. I have done some some similar work, but I merely cut into a square piece of 12 by 12 by 3/4 yellow heart and then glued it up to a round piece of Padauk on the inside. I glued the saw cut closed. Then I turned a 'Pumpkin Pie" for my mom who is quite a pie baker. This was before I had a good camera. Your technique would have worked really well for that piece.
