Project Information

Here is a woodstrip kayak project I did a few years back. It's built out of 1/4" x 3/4" red cedar, spanish cedar, pine and being in Oregon I had to work in some douglas fir woodstrips shaded over a set of forms. The recessed hatch areas were shaped from blocks of red cedar and the coaming rim around the cockpit is out of carbon fiber. After hours of long board sanding to get the hull and deck faired, the whole thing was fiberglassed over inside and out. The project took 300-400 hours. I was very rewarding when I got it on the water and found out it paddles as good as it looks.

Wow, that looks awesome! I've been contemplating building my own one of these but have a couple questions on durability. How well does it take bumps and what not with rocks? The reason I ask is that around here the landings are fairly rough and you are more than likely going to hit something hard.

Thanks Scotsman, I enjoy making functional works of art such as this.

Ryanlipski, I do treat it with more care than my inflatable or plastic kayaks. In general, I avoid rocky landings with it. Maybe a layer of kelvar fabric would help for regular rocky landings.

That's super nice. If I were ever to get the gumption up and try a wooden craft, it would be like yours.
What does that weigh? Can you carry by yourself? I see you have carry handles on each end. Looks easy for two to carry. That looks like so much fun….........

Thanks Jack, weighs 50 lbs so it's easy to shoulder and carry. The grab handles make it easy for two people to carry two kayaks down to the water.

Fifty pounds! I have an aluminum 15' canoe and it weighs 75 lbs. That's much lighter than I'd thought. Very nice. Thanks…............

Through your choice of woods, fiberglassing methods and outfitting it would be no problem to build the same kayak at 42-45 lbs. "Production" canoes and kayak are notably over build to take abuses in account, that adds a lot of weight.
