Project Information

Here is a woodstrip kayak project I did a few years back. It's built out of 1/4" x 3/4" red cedar, spanish cedar, pine and being in Oregon I had to work in some douglas fir woodstrips shaded over a set of forms. The recessed hatch areas were shaped from blocks of red cedar and the coaming rim around the cockpit is out of carbon fiber. After hours of long board sanding to get the hull and deck faired, the whole thing was fiberglassed over inside and out. The project took 300-400 hours. I was very rewarding when I got it on the water and found out it paddles as good as it looks.

Hi Scott,

This is a wonderful project that will give you immediate feedback on the construction process once you put it in the water. If it floats you did your job. :)

Seriously you did a nice job here that is a gorgeous kayak.

thanks for the post.

Thanks for all the comments …

I purchased plans that are really scaled drawing for the forms. I tweaked the form spacing some to change the lenght of it. Then you spend a few days ripping strips and feeding them through the router

The two highlight on the project where running my hand over the hull and knowing it was finally fair, and paddling out on to Waldo Lake (in the Oregon Cascades) looking over the beaufy wood deck framed by the mountains and lake, great feel …
