Project Information

This is rifle display that I made for a client in California, I'm shipping it out tomorrow. The rifle isn't going with it he has a Sako he is going to display on this. I am really happy with how it turned out, I couldn't have asked for a better combination and selection of hardwoods to use in this project. The center is a piece of flame birch which is a wicked piece of wood. A ton of sanding went into the center since it and and thickness planer didn't want to play nicely together as the tear out was unbelievable. The grain in the birch appears to move as you move across it. It really trips people out. The margin around the birch is curly cherry, I was lucky enough to get a couple of 10 foot lengths from a local cabinet shop for free so I used the one with the most pronounced curl in it. The cherry creates an awesome border between the birch and walnut. I was able to get all the walnut out of one board so the colors matched perfectly.

I finished it with Formby's tung oil finish and a nice coat of satin lacquer. The supports are like my other one with the rifle strap swivels and leather. I made this one adjustable from the back since I didn't have the actual rifle here with me to mount it. That way he can make it perfectly level since the leather actually runs through to the back and is then secured via a small screw.

Thanks for looking

Beautiful display, absolutely awesome, is the rifle a pre-64 model 70?

Hey George, the rifle shown in this photo is a 1908 Mauser that was sported up with a new stalk and re-chambered to 30.06 back in the 50's. It came from my neighbors gun collection, he has many vintage rifles many pre WWI and WWII. The gun that is actually going on it is a modern Sako 85 Stainless Steel Varmint, a Finnish rifle.

Beautiful wood combination. Does that mount lock so it can't be dismounted?

No this version doesn't lock, I am working out how to make one that does lock and still be aesthetically pleasing, or you can always put a trigger lock into rifle itself if it's required by law.

Okay. Now I really can't make up my mind. A cabinet, a rack, or a display of similar design. I like all the patterns in the grain. Great job!

Awesome Gun case, looks fantastic, that would be really nice in a man cave, but my wife would not let me put that on our walls in our place. She said thats what a gun cabinets for or a closet is for. Great Job.

Hey Q, I know the feeling, I just make them for other people and don't have one myself. That is also the reason my deer mount is in the shop and not in the house.

I really like this mount and since I am not familiar with rifles, here's some thoughts on how to conceal or lock the rifle and still be aesthetically pleasing to show off this beautiful mount:
1) Encase the entire frame in plexiglass box with hinge & lock system.
2) If there is a metal type of strap or chain that can be used like the one you installed and then make a wood cover that this hardware can be inserted to, covering the metal and only showing wood. A wooden sleeve of sorts grooved out to house the hardware.

Maybe some of these ideas will be helpful. Keep up the excellent work!

Very nice. I have my wife's, grandfather's army rifle. Something like this would look great in my living room.

Very very nice. I especially like the swivel/leather supports. Great idea! Don't ever even think of covering it with plexiglass or some other stuff. It would destroy the clean beautiful look. If you think you need a lock there are much more creative ways to do it with wood, etc., and not destroy the look you worked hard at. "Conceal" the rifle, so absurd, that's what the display it for!

Really wonderful use of materials. I guess with a rifle stock like yours, you really have to go over the top! The leather is a really nice touch.
