Project Information

This is a 22 inch diameter lazy susan with a packet cut marquetry pattern. The substrate is mdf, the border is shop sawn bocote veneer.

The radial match was from some walnut I found on eBay, (rosebud veneer). Here is the process.
  • Make the 8 way radial match.
  • Freehand cut the walnut radial match and add black veneer cross grained banding
  • Cut and assemble the Spanish Cedar border larger than needed. Lay the walnut and black border piece over the cedar. Use it as a template to cut the cedar. Do not cut final size yet.
  • Draw the ribbon pattern, mount it to cardboard. Assemble the packet and scroll saw the pieces.
  • Sand shade and glue the veneer to the mdf substrate.
  • I then glued more mdf to the backer veneer to thicken the edge.
  • The bocote was sawn to 1/8" edge glued to make a 6' long piece. It was then band clamped to the edge.

The finish is French Polish.

I need some help. I made the ribbons out of veneer I got from an assortment. I don't know the species and would like to provide a good description to the client.

Beautifully done Marco. Your attention to detail is wonderful, I like the mix. I can't help with the veneer species.
Great job!

This is awesome. It would be great to have a step by step on the ribbion effect. I would like to put it in a table top or something. I'm a inlay novice and dullard. Really cool. Thanks

The ribbons look like yellowheart aka satinwood. Was it a yellow before you put the finish on ?
It is hard to tell from the picture.

This is beautiful by the way !!
Love the wood choices together.

Thanks for looking, I appreciate the comments.

Yes Bill, I started the project in Paul's advanced class and finished it at home.

The wood was not stained, just French polished with super blond. I will go with yellow heart. Hey it's my story, I'll tell it as big as I want to.

Gary, I got 60 hours in it. The bocote was too thick at 1/4", i ripped it in half so it would bend without breaking. The next one will take 40 hours. The French polish takes about a week, at 10 minutes a session so it needs to spend some alone time during finishing.
