Project Information

I was asked to design and build a shadowbox for a retiring AF member. The member had a very successful career and loved to cook for events and functions. I decided to make 2 boxes; one for the career and one for cooking.

I used Mahogany as my medium, General Finish semi-gloss for the finish. All screws are brass, UV protective glass and Wall Buddies for the hangers. All joints are splined with Wenge to strengthen the corners.

Always looking for was to improve my skills, so please comment with any suggestions.

Thank you for looking!

DnD,

Those are really nice. What did you use to soften or "round" the edges of the boxes? I have never thought of flat material for a flag box to hold in the glass. Simple but it looks really nice. I have always made some ogee molding or something. I will try your look next time. Thanks for posting

Very nice work! Have been involved in Public Safety for many years. You gave me an idea for a display of badges, patches and name tags from my career. Thanks, I greatly appreciate you sharing your project!

Petey, I used an 1/8* round over bit and finished up by sanding. I like the idea of using an ogee and have in the past. I almost always use an ogee on flag boxes, it gives it some elagence which that type of box deserves. Thanks for the kind words.

Jake, Glad this project was able to provide some ideas for you. If you decide to make a shadow box for yourself, please share. Always like seeing new ideas.

Brian,

I tried to zoom on the image but unable to view the face of the box with any clarity so my question: when you built the box, how did you address glass replacement?

I'm on a tight deadline to build one for my Son's retirement and trying to determine the best method for glass installation. I'm thinking it might be base to rabbit the face and use cove molding.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you.

Retired Chief.

RC,

Greetings. Thanks for looking at the retirement boxes I built. I do one of two things to allow for glass replacement. I will either use silicone to hold it in place or I'll make a rabbit behind the glass and install a retaining strip w/screws to hold it in place. Let me know if this helped answer the question. I don't have any photos of the box interior to share, sorry.
