Project Information

I've had this metal Craftsman bench for years with only 2 drawers that were so deep that they just invited chaos. It seemed like it was only used to store things (that means piled on top) that hadn't yet found a home.

Finally had enough and got busy replacing it with something more useful and much nicer to look at.
Went from 2 deep drawers to 12 "just right size" drawers! Just basic birch ply construction with full extension drawer slides. I used lock rabbet joints for the drawers and they are all trimmed with walnut to match my earlier ""Foreman bench and finished with multiple coats of wipe on Poly.

The bottom 3 spaces (not completed yet) will become "slide-outs" instead of drawers.
(The last pic shows the original eyesore!)

You just can't have too many drawers!!

Thanks for looking and your comments are welcomed!!

I'm with you on the depth of the drawers. You want storage but it should be efficient storage. Thanks for sharing. Looks like my next project will be a storage/drawer re-build. RH

Now that is quite an improvement Dennie! Are you thinking about some kaizen foam for those drawers?? Your showroom (I mean shop) is looking better than ever!

Wow. I'm jealous.
Thin drawers are nice.

Really great addition to your shop. Nice work.
I was lucky enough to salvage a similar cabinet from a medical office. It is great for storage except the drawer slides are poor quality and constantly hang up. Replacing the slides is more cost and work that I want to do so I put up with them. It even came with the chemically inert top.
However, I still can't seem to keep it clear of "stuff". So good luck on that. LOL

I like the theme, with the ply and walnut edge banding, my whole shop is like that! Looks awesome!

This is a very nice auxiliary bench. Use it for an extra bench and you always have those wonderful storage drawers under the top. This bench is a great addition to your shop. Nice work!
