Project Information

I had a spatula on which the plastic handle broke a bit over a month ago, and I decided I liked it enough to put on a wooden handle. Started with some scraps of curly cherry I had, and sandwiched a bit of 1/16 (or maybe 3/32) ash veneer between them to get the fit right. The handle is a little twisted from the spatula, but that just makes the lighter stripe from the ash look cool, right? It's a design feature!

Finished with a few coats of tung oil thinned 50-50 with mineral spirits in order to get better penetration.

Details of the build are in a blog I wrote:

Total time was maybe a half-dozen hours, in between other projects. My shop-time has been limited lately, so it was nice having a project that I could work on for short periods when I did get a few minutes in the shop.

Good rescue DP... but I still reckon it's display cabinet destined.

Looks like you agree, indirectly… where's the sizzling sausage or hamburger on the end… or has it lost it's fat and charcoal proof properties?

It doesn't matter if the handle is twisted as long as it flips food :)
Well done Dave. Or maybe medium rare.

Thanks, Tom!

Thanks, Dick! I'd feel better about it if I'd meant to do that.

Duckie, it'll get used.

Thanks, Tony!

Medium rare. Or rare. Or maybe even blue if I'm at a place that knows what that means, Duck.

Thanks, Pottz. It's a good use for small pieces of pretty wood, too. This handle came from a bit that was too small for a saw handle after I cut around the knot that made the grain interesting. Glad I can help you find new rabbit holes!

Blue, blue, blue… hold the steak in your palm… hold the back of your hand over the fire… when it starts to get warm, it's well (figuratively) and truelly done!

Thanks, Dave!

I'm not sure what you want to do with your BBW tongs, Pottz. Not sure I want to know.

Thanks, Peter!

Looks good Dave! I have a handleless spatula sitting on my workbench needing the same treatment.

Thanks, Steve! It wasn't as simple as I'd hoped, due to the short tang on the spatula, but it wasn't too bad. Lots of waiting for glue to dry and such. Good luck!

OMG the things you get to read on a woodworking website.

Firstly:- Well done on the repair process.

Secondly:- so you better hide your flipper in case your lady just happens to see the postman trying to stuff the item Pottzy sent you in your letterbox! because if you dont there willl be no M/C riding for a few days!
