Project Information

This is a desk I refinished for a neighbor. It had a great deal of graffiti on it so I had to sand it down to fresh wood. I was disappointed to lose the patina but, the magic marker art was atrocious.
I think it is oak. I used shellac for most of the finish. I did put a couple of coats of poly on the desk top and some paste wax.
The mistake I made was to try a French finish on the top. It looked better before I sanded it with 600 grit.
I actually made some money on the project. Perhaps I could have made more but I don't want to take advantage of a neighbor.

Beautiful school desk. Maybe I am a bit biased, seeing as how I work in school administration, but I really love this project. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the compliments. It was a fun project for the most part. Evenly sanding in the corners was frustrating. The biggest hassle I had was of course the finishing. I should have cut the shellac a bit more. I always had some brush tracks somewhere. I tried the spray on shellac. I must have applied it too quickly because it did not cover evenly. When I sanded it with 400 grit it appeared to be covered with dots.
I will be using shellac must more in the future. I really liked the look.
