Project Information

This was another pallet find. Two planks of dark red colored wood in with some pine. I pulled them out and jointed them. There wasnt much wood left after i cut out the split ends and nail holes. Enough for these two little boxes. What fascinated me was that the wood smelled like walnut when cut, worked like walnut and is grained like walnut. Except it looks like aged cherry but nicer. Does anyone have any idea of what it may be? Because I want more. Its really beautifull, warm, rich dark red.

The third (square) little box is from off-cut laminations. I made them all at the same time. Lids are Zebra. Splines are maple and walnut. Lifters are also from off-cut laminations (I hate trowing wood away). Finished with Danish Oil, poly and waxed.

I have never heard of red walnut but I have worked some walnut that had a reddish/brownish hue to it…..though not as pronounced as yours is. The boxes are all beautiful….Love that last pic. Great job.

Tokolosi, Hard to tell from photos alone. I would guess the first one is American Walnut and the last has African Mahogany sides with some sap wood. Good job on your boxes. I especially like the elongated, paired splines. That is an especially nice look. You might consider adding the dimensions of your boxes in your posts. It is difficult for readers to tell scale from just pictures. Keep boxing and keep posting.
