Project Information

I built this canoe from storm downed red cedar and red oak milled with a chainsaw mill.
She's my baby, 11' 7" in length.
Easy to carry, a dream on the water.
She's built from Gil Gilpatrick "puddle duck" forms from a previous build with some forms omitted and the spacing modified to achieve target size and weight.
Thanks for looking

thanks for the looks and comments,
xwingace, i never named her but my son calls her "new hotness"
jeffl, the epoxy sealed her from exposure to air and water and she's got 3 coats of satin exterior waterbased minwax with u v inhibitors, so far she looks freshly planed.

Bowtie I guess sealing makes sense since the color change is a form of oxidation. It's looks great, I'd be nice to keep it that way. I build some cedar chairs and for me I put them in the weather to tone down the color. If people oil them or set them under cover they take longer to change but usually do. Awesome canoe! !

AUBrian, your absolutely correct. The plans for the puddleduck are from "Building a strip canoe" by Gil Gilpatrick.
Sorry for the mix-up.

I have a 14' 6" plastic / ash canoe at home. The thing is a beast to carry at 86 lbs. Knowing how light cedar is, I would LOVE to build one of these, but the process seems so intimidating. And I wonder about the weight of the result as well… I am looking to offload my plastic boat, and build 2 cedar boats. Something like the solo boat you built there, and a 17' or so tripper…

The color variations in the cedar gave it a lot of character - beautiful canoe!

I was hot and bothered to build one of these beauties. But, after digging up all kind of info on the net and in books, I bought the next door neighbor's neglected 16' stripper for $100. It needs a bit of TLC [patching the fiberglass] and maybe some new gunwales and definitely new seat brackets. But at $100, I think I'm blessed.

Gorgeous work on that puppy of yours. Bravo.

always,
J.C.

Dude that looks so nice. How long did it take to build and do you have a spec sheet for it. I have access to red cedar at a great price green off the mill if these are decent to build I'd like to build 10-12 of them for Boy Scout trips.

Love this canoe. What forms were omitted and how did you figure out the spacing I want to build one similar to this, the size is perfect for me and it's a piece of artwork.
Thanks

Cool build, looks great. I like the ladder rack for the build, gets me to thinking about a kayak I would like to build, great job.
