Project Information

I built this canoe from storm downed red cedar and red oak milled with a chainsaw mill.
She's my baby, 11' 7" in length.
Easy to carry, a dream on the water.
She's built from Gil Gilpatrick "puddle duck" forms from a previous build with some forms omitted and the spacing modified to achieve target size and weight.
Thanks for looking

Absolutely fantastic. It looks too good to put on the water - it might get wet!!! I'd love to make one of those one day.

Bowtie built a red cedar canoe.
'Tis a beautiful thing to view.
The lines are supreme,
But if it goes in the stream
I hope he used waterproof glue.

Bowtie used titebond 3,
it's waterproof you see,
but she's got fiberglass and epoxy,
it's what makes her so foxy!
bowtie ain't much of a poet

I was thinking of that nice red cedar smell it must have…but then I read that you fiberglassed it. Great looking canoe.

Very nice craftsmanship. That's what I'd call an heirloom canoe that you can pass on to your kids and grandkids.

It's just a little shorter than mine. I'm curious on how much it weighs and how long it took you to build it?

Thanks for all the kind comments,
Greg, it smelled great while building but she's completely sealed now.
tyvekboy, she's about 27 pounds (weighed on a bath scale) and took about 7 weeks, evenings and wekends to build.

Very pretty functional lines. What a beauty. Epoxy finish is a life time of joy. Really hard good work. I am impressed by a woodcrafter.

That whole build just amazess me! That looks like a piece of furniture. You have some serious talent. What's that white stuff in the background? Looks like snow, but in Alabama?

gfadvm, yes it's snow. I work in huntsville,al and a little snow shuts almost all overpasses and bridges down. i love snow days, a chance to build or just enjoy the woods.

That's one beautiful canoe! It's way to pretty to drag up the beach after a day on the lake.

Snow in Alabama: so much for global warming. A little snow pretty much shuts down our state as well.
