Project Information

I took a couple of spare pieces from an old mirror for the doors, used a cigar box for the base and added small tumbled glass beads for the knobs. The hooks inside are vintage NOS, the chain and eye hooks on top are also vintage. I used newer hinges, but have an idea for the next one that won't involve new stuff…small magnet on the inside base (I put two small eye hooks near the bottom of the doors to act as a catch). Finish is alcohol based custom mix with lacquer buffed with wax.

I like that I really do
It is so unique.
Flat hooks can look good if you put them in the bbq
then let them rust a wee bit, then without cleaning
rub some beeswax and steel wool. You can also do
the hinges then a slotted rusty screw.

Nice job of recycling - always nice to see wood saved from the landfills. Also, nice project.

I was originally thinking of using vintage eyehole bolts for the hinges, but somewhere along the way I was half way done putting on regular hinges…and I just didn't bother to color them up….not sure if I got lazy or just felt the project was taking way too long….
