Project Information

For the last couple of years I've made the prizes for the raffle that is held at our annual banquet for the Mason Dixon Holiday dinner.

I made 6 pens that will be in the raffle and Jack Dalton made a Candle Box out of Sapele wood.

Jack posted a blog here.

The pens are made from

Mango that I got from LJ Harold, (The pen at 11 o'clock)
Bocote ( 2 o'clock)
Pink Ivory (for the Ladies Drawing) (4 o'clock)
Brazilian TulipWood (8 o'clock)

and 2 from the #391 Cherry Burl not yet in a case.

I made species cards for each of the woods so that the winner of each would be able to tell their friends what the wood was in their pen.

I've included my Lumberjock business card in each pen case.

Nice job…..I've gotten so that I always keep a few pens around to give out. I used to turn them out by the bundle….Then I quit doin them for a long time….but when I was asked to do something for a friends, youngsters, little league uniform raiser…..I turned out a bunch of small lathe items for grab bags…the pens and pencils always get a good reception and I can always find enough good scraps to make quite a few blanks.

Those turned out great….and that piece of cherry was beautiful….very nice indeed.

Karson I have to say the same as Dusty56. But the information about Mango in your card needs modification. Is not Thailand a South East Asian country? The Kingdom of Thailand is an independent country that lies in the heart of Southeast Asia.
The following brief information from Wikipedia may also be worth noting
Area harvested of mangoes as of 200735
Country Hectares
India 2 143 000
China 45 000
Thailand 285 000
Indonesia 266 000
Pakistan 2215 000
Mexico 200 000
Philippines 181 000
Nigeria 126 500
Brazil 89 800
Guinea 82 000
Vietnam 52 000
Bangladesh 51 000

Mangoes have been cultivated in the Indian subcontinent for thousands of years
nearly half of the world's mangoes are cultivated in India alone. Malaysia is not included in the above table. Can you sustantiate that Malaysia has the widest varieties of species of Mango?
If latest information supersedes the above information I may please be pardoned.

Interesting information Sharad…I recently got a shipment of curly mango, chocolate heart mango, curly green mango and spalted mango….all from Hawaii…beautiful woods all of them…..The grains are spectacular and the wood is very nice to turn…...have you had any opportunity to use any? I am very interested in seeing samples of the different kinds. That pen that Karson turned out is beautiful - Some of the mango I received has a very similar appearance to burl wood…without being taken from a cap…I was thinking of making a few pens too if I get enough waste from the bowls I plan to turn….the chocolate heart mango will make a spectacular bowl….I am looking forward to turning it - I need to get with it as it is destined as a Christmas gift.

I appreciate very much the correction on the info. (So much for web experts) The mango that I got was from Hawaii. I believe it was from in the vicinity of Harold's place. He called them local woods.

One of the pieces of mango that I got was about 3" square and 12" long and it had the most beautiful varied colors throughout. I don't have any idea what to make but it might be very nice as a pepper grinder. I'll have to get another one for a salt grinder.

A bowl blank also had the same kind of colors.

Andrew the wood was not an oily wood, it seemed to be quite porus like red oak. The Bowl blank is a greyish shade color and the 3" square by 12" long piece has red and green streaks in it very beautiful.

I didn't notice any odor when turning the pen blank.

David I'm glad you appreciated the Picasso comment. I'm not sure where that comment came from, deep down in my creative mind I guess.
