Project Information

Finally got to use some af that Spalted Maple slab I bought out in Keizer a few months ago. The Quilted Maple was a big box store treasure find. White Oak for the inserts and the floor. Marine spar varnish for the finish. The box joints were left a little proud on purpose.

Very nice box Jerry! I have been using that "hinged style" for lids lately and really like it. The bevels really set it off.

Thanks Jeff, the bevels are actually an optical illusion!

Jerry, this is really beautiful, especially the "firewood" featured in the lid. It takes an artist's eye to see the possibilities in a piece like that. Well done!

Ok. I was always envious of your work Jerry, now I am really jealous and envious of the skills you have. Very nice box indeed. I like and agree with Art's comments.

Thanks for sharing.

Very cool. I'd love to hear more on how you drill, install the hing pins. A few of my boxes are inset top with brass pin but I'm not real satisfied with my method.

Thanks very much..you are not alone in the envy thing, this box was born out my own feelings of inferiority when I saw Steve Altman's boxes..now there is a true craftsman.

I use a drill press because my body does not understand a straight line. I use 1/8" Brass rod from Ace because it's nice looking and easy to sand flush. I carefully measure my drilling depth and put the depth stop at the appropriate place on the drill press. I cut the brass to length minus about 1/32". Then I put a little thick consistency super glue halfway down the brass pin, just enough to glue it into the sides but not enough for the glue to travel into the lid itself. Then I start the brass pin into the box side with my finger, but finish pushing it in with a small very flat block of plywood so it will stop exactly flush with the box side. I perform this operation with the box resting on it's bottom so the sides are perpendicular to the workbench, this pevents the pin from falling too far into the hole if the fit is a little loose. I spray some activator on it, let it dry, and then give it a finish sanding with a sanding block before applying the final finish.

Wow, I can hardly see any angle in them D.T.s!
Love the Maple, all I get to play with lately is QS White Oak.
Anyways too cold around here to go outside, unless to get more Firewood.

Hey Andre! Well, those are box joints, that would explain no angle!

Looks like a masterpiece Jerry. The grain blends in well with the miters.I get the impression of a picture of a mountain in the center. Well done.

Very good idea to actualy point out wood 'imperfection'' and turn it into something more beautiful. I like the angled frame parts on top.Nice fingerjoints too.
