Project Information

I made this scalloped top lowboy in the mid 90's and was never happy with the finish. I posted several times on here about a crack in the top and issues I had with the refinishing results I was getting. Well after several months I'm finally happy with the results. I still have to wait for the top to cure then steel wool and wax but it's FINALLY done!I got the plans from a December 1993 copy of Woodwork magazine. I wanted something close to Mahogany so I used Sapele. This was my first attempt at anything not straight lines and doing some carving. I'm mostly happy with it but I would like the carving to be better.

Very nice to every detail, couldn't imagine the work to get this to come together. Like the curved top which sets it apart

Myles, I am finishing up a similar piece. I can relate to the carving angst. Yours came out really well and the finish is awesome.

Well done and thanks for posting.

There were so many people on here with advice on the finish that I wanted to post the final result. I used Arm R Seal but had issues with it not leveling out properly. After I thinned it the result was thinner so it took more coats but came out level.
The carving is flat compared to what I wanted but I was trying to use one board for the drawer front to keep the grain consistent so I didn't want to chance pushing my luck.

Good choice Myles. I pushed a little too much and wrecked my chance for continuous grain. I had to go back to my test carving and clean up the warts.

Amazing! I have always wanted to try those legs. How was turning those out of Sapele? I have done some but don't think I'm ready to turn such a beautiful leg, not to mention 4!

No turning involved, I think you could probably turn the foot but the rest has some shape but even that is a personal choice, you could turn major parts of the leg but I don't turn so it was bandsaw and hand tools. Spoke shaves and rasps mostly, some on an oscillating spindle sander. Sapele was pretty easy to work with, fairly soft.
