Project Information

Okay okay, I know…Texas A&M colors are maroon and white but this is what an Aggie fan ordered and who am I to argue? :)

The silver glass inlay really snaps, crackles and pops! When outdoors in the sunlight the glass is super brilliant and looks like it's battery operated…lol. Purpleheart is not one of my favorite woods but it bends very well and is strong.

Hope ya'll like it.

Congratulations on another beautiful ring! Wish we could have had merchandise like this to sell when I worked in the jewelry store. Keep up the good work and Tiffany & Co. will knocking on your door.

Hey there leafherder. Put a good word in for me at Tiffany & Co. LOL

Sorry I have yet replied about stone crushing. I do not need much material for ring inlays so that's nice. I have resorted to good ole pounding away but usually I use a galvanized pipe with a rounded end attached which in turn travels through a larger pipe for stability and material is collected at the base of a larger rounded cap. Keeps almost all the material from falling out as it gets pulverized. The pipe allows more force with less effort…but still is not a pretty process. :)

Your rings look fantastic!

Any chance you could do a blog or post a set of photos of the process you go through to make them?

Great work, thanks for posting.

Your grinding process may not be pretty, however, the results are certainly are. I'll add my vote for a blog on the whole process. Great that your uncle brings you goodies from his travels. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you choppertoo and CFrye.
Silly as it sounds, crafting bentwood rings has kind of become a trade secret and "spilling all the beans" would not be fair to those who had to venture out and invest their time and energy with sweat and tears to learn the "devil is in the details" for bentwood rings. I would say to research the bending process in general first and then modify on a much smaller scale. Also, I recommend you look at the process for basic instructions at instructables.com website which is a good starting point. That will give you the nuts and bolts to refine your own style and method with lots of trial and error. Of course, only do it if it's therapeutic or else you will go cRaZy! :)

I'll have to watch the close up replays when A&M plays to see this ring. Did Johnny at least give you an autograph? All in good fun, of course.
Or maybe it was your last QB, who is now our new QB, that ordered it? It would look good on his wife (but what wouldn't).

Understood about trade secrets. The instructable was very informative. Thanks for that. I am sure it is harder than it sounds.

Thanks again CFrye. I love crafting these rings but not so much staging them for photos and watermarking.

Thanks hoss! My new UT Longhorn ring doesn't have near the same contrast but I believe the glass inlay makes up for it…as in life I am hoping less is more. :)
