Project Information

My Brain said that I needed this. Actually it will help a lot with carting sawdust up the stairs. Emptying that plastic bag was always really messy, and I would allow it to get way too full. Now I parked a 20 gal trash can in the empty space of my Delta DC, and its job is to gather most all the incoming debris. It does a fine job of this, and the can pops right out for emptying.

I built a design based on the baffle work by Thein. The air comes in, gets pushed to the side, so it swirls around. The dust is in this air. The dust finds the slit around the baffle board and falls through to the bottom of the can. The air continues swirling and exits through the center pipe.

I did not find any real plans or instructions, so I winged it. The multiple circles were cut on a the bandsaw with a crude circle cutting jig. The Delta DC has a 5 inch inlet so this presented a purchasing problem. LJ Lenny came to the rescue and supplied me with the foot of the flex hose that I needed. (Thanks, Lenny.) Now I needed a coupler on the collector side for the 5 inch hose. What I did was to cut a small disk and then place a 4 inch (5.25 inch O.D.) PVC coupler on it. Again I used the circle cutter to trim it down to size. I have this piece on the top, and its male counterpart on the inside of the assembly.

The rest of the build was pretty straight forward, with a lot of measure twice thingies. The baffle is held with dowels. The completed unit seems to tuck in quite comfortably and works a charm.

definitely on the 'to-do' list. already have the trash can. now if I can only find the time to get in the shop - that would be great!

Steve: a great build. I bought a cyclone on ebay that sits on top of the metal lid for my trash can and it comes out of there to my grizzly DC that I put a paper cartridge on top of and a clear plastic bag on the bottom. So I can see what goes in the bag.

Usually the only stuff that goes into the bag is when I forget to empty the can and it goes to the DC.

The can is an easier carry to the pile.

Steve,

My dust collector is much like yours. I have no need to seperate the dust though. I would like to increase it's vacuum power. Does adding one of those whirlpool/tornado cannisters increase vacuum suction?

Thanks

Thanks everyone.

Ripcross: I have found with my limited use of this cyclone that I loose some power. That 1.5 hp DC does have some good air movement, but not an incredible amount. In the past I only used one hose and would move that around from machine to machine for maximal impact. This may also be because I am too lazy to plumb the shop.

One thing that I noticed was that I wave the flex hose over the floor at the end of a project to suck up chips. I would usually suck up the rubber mats while do this. Well, with the cyclone attached, the mats don't come flying off the floor like they use to. So I guess there is a reduction in static pressure. I am not sure about CFM. Maybe they are linked. Still a lot of air movement though.

Hey Steve, I see that you "got 'r done". Nice build. I am particularly impressed with your ingenuity in shaving down that PVC coupler. What a great idea to cut the wooden disk and then use the BS to trim it down via the circle cutting jig. As they woud say in a Guinness beer add: "Brilliant!"

Now everyone will want one… oh I already have one… oh well .. will have to look for something else to do.
I say … anything to make life in the shop easier has got to be good.

Do you still get chips in the bag after the Thien baffle on the can?
I built one almost like it and don't even get any dust past the can.
I vented it outside but really didn't need to. It sure helps keep
the shop cleaner doesn't it?
