Project Information

This is the anarchist's power tool chest, if there is such a thing. The inspiration for this project came from perusing internet photos of actual anarchist's tool chest photos. Currently the majority of my tools require electricity. And up until recently all these tools took up a massive amount of space in their own uninspiring plastic carrying cases on three different shelves. So I said 'why not'.

This tool chest is square, has a hinged lid, and has tills that slide, but that's where the similarity between an actual anarchists tool chest and this one ends. An anarchist's tool chest is a work of art; this is merely functional. There is no sexy joinery and the box is made almost exclusively of plywood. It's painted Federal Blue in a waterborne alkyd. See more photos of this project and read my ramblings on the blog entry.

Great Idea. One could make room for a lot more tools with one of those.

Glad I'm not the only one whose shop arrangement has to leave room for a motorcycle or two. :)

I thought Chris Schwarz's "Anarchist's" tool chest was just that, a plywood box made of home center materials and screwed together that could be built without putting in 100's of hours of labor, vs. a traditional tool chest with the dovetails and solid boards and such and sexy joinery? Nice chest by the way. And power tools seem the the perfect thing to put in an Anarchist's chest. My power tools are in some cheap mdf cupboard things from walmart, your solution looks much nicer.

A toolchest is a still a toolchest even if it holds power tools. Looks great and a great idea to boot.

Does this mean you have room to buy more tools now?

Christopher Schwarz actually did a DVD for those wanting to do it in plywood. As he said, not everyone had time to cut 100+ dovetails. So why not and it looks like a great box!
