Project Information
This is my first post here! I'm a computer engineer in the day and a want-to-be New Yankee workshop guy on the weekends.
so forgive me if my work is not up to par with everyone else here. I'm getting there!
A good buddy of mine asked if i could build a portable rifle rack for his Airsoft/Paintball guns. When they go play in the field during the breaks his buddies usually just lay their guns around the ground and on the sides of their car. I came up with idea this after looking at similar ones on this site and others. http://lumberjocks.com/projects/2847.
His requirement was that it was small enough to fit in his mini cooper, light weight, not too expensive to make, hold about a dozen guns ranging from snipers rifles to stubby close quarter combat style guns.
The first one i made came out nice, it's the one that is very dark walnut color, but looks like black spray paint
. It was my first attempt with an HVLP gun and a trans tint dye/toner and I did it at night with bad lighting, started off good, but after failing to blend it properly, it came out way too dark.
It got a lot of looks at the field and people asked where we bought it, and one guy, wanted to buy it from me on site. I offered to make one for him to trade for another airsoft gun worth $400 and he agreed!!!! He owns a store so I'm sure he gets them for cheaper, but hey, this only cost me $35 for materials and about a day of good fun building it. This is the second one that I built for him and he has it in his shop when they work on customers guns. The cool thing is that both of these are compact 30×28 x 4 1/2 and folds into itself with no chains or obstructions. I also added the cool factor of putting in some torsion springs so when you open it the bottom backstop and second gun rack it automatically flips up locking it in place.
If i build another one it will be with maple or oak since i didn't want to mess that up the first time, this is out of regular white wood, probably pine i picked up at home depot.
Thought i post it since I got my inspiration from here. Hope this helps someone else! Thanks
