Project Information

I'm pretty happy with this one, guys.

I had some old unused shelving from my shop renovation. I cut it half, turned it on its side and violin! A made-to-order pliers, snips, and vise-grips storage solution.

The build: I cut a backer board which spans two of the french cleats. I then simply aligned and affixed the modified shelves to the backer by screwing wooden "washer" pieces that span at least 3 of the 'rungs'. I wasn't sure if they'd be enough to hold the weight (and the final decision there is yet to be seen when/if I fill it up) but it's been doing perfectly so far!

Never thought about using wire shelving that way.

I like it! Alas, I tossed all my wire shelving when I moved across the country a little over a year ago, but I may have to buy some just to cut it up. Still just have a pile of this sort of tool taking up a corner of my workbench.

Nice! yeah, I threw out a bunch of these before realizing that I could use them for something! Another good way to store pliers and this kind of form factor tool is just by putting them with one 'leg' in a coffee can and the other 'leg' outside. They end up falling nicely around the rim of the coffee can. This is what I did before I moved to french cleats.

I previously used some cutoff PVC pipes screwed to a board for similar use, but it doesn't work for things like locking pliers, where there is a linkage between the legs. Seems like that's why you have them clipped on the LH side by their jaws? This looks like a great idea, and another use for an otherwise unused scrap material
