Project Information

Nearly 100 days ago I posted this project thinking it was nearly completed.

It is finally ready to hang on the basement wall, 3 1/2 months after her birthday.

Around 20 years ago my wife & I were living south of Milwaukee & decided to drive to Minneapolis to see our home state Tigers play the Twins at the Metrodome. During batting practice Tigers 2nd baseman, Lou Whitaker, cracked his bat and walked off the field toward where we were near their dugout. When he got close my wife called out his name &, without asking, he handed here the bat he had just cracked. Our apartment smelled like fresh pine tar for nearly a month.

Fast forward 20 years and the bat has never been properly displayed until this week.

The case is made of walnut w/maple splines & the idea for the glass frame is from an American Woodworker article on weekend picture frames. All of the patches were purchased on-line around Christmas. I mounted a french cleat on the back and hid the screws in the case with walnut dowels. The finish is 2 coats of hand rubbed oil with several coats of shellac.

The funnest part of building this project was the trip I made to the craft store w/my 11 year old daughter to pick out the background fabric. All of the ladies were doing a double take at the burly guy in the carrhart shirt picking out fabric. My daughter & I both got a good chuckle out of that.

Thanks for looking.

P.S. The pictures were taken in the dark, and a good amount of dust I had disturbed ended up on the top of the case in the last picture.
