Showcase cover image for Plaque for fellow firefighter.

Project Information

Nothing too special. A firefighter that I've been working with for 20 years has moved on to another job, but we wanted to honor his service so I made this plaque. The axe was ordered separately. I made the plaque out of three pieces of walnut glued up. I mounted the axe to the plaque with mounting hardware that is normally used to mount an axe on a truck. He was very happy with it and quite surprised. Finish is just a few coats of oil based poly.

YOU might not think this is special, but I'd bet the recipient thought differently! Simple but classy. Is that his real service axe or is it ornamental? I noticed that there is a badge on the axe head. Good idea to use the truck mounts for the axe as well. Well done overall.

I love it, nice craftsmanship. What a nice memento. How long is the axe and how much does it weigh?

Ron, the axe is 36" and the plaque is 41". Not sure of the weight, but I guess it's about 5lb axe head.

Very nice retirement commemoration! I've thought about doing this for many years and have just not had the opportunity yet.

Thanks, this is the first one I've done. I guess now I'm the official plaque maker for the FD.

"Nothing to special"..... You are being modest. This is very nice and I'm sure your coworker loved it! My younger cousin was just hired by South Bend Fire Department and I think I will make something similar for him. Thanks for sharing!

Nicely done job. And much respect for your fire-fighting; I think the things you guys do on the job takes a very special person. I stand in awe of fire-fighters, paramedics, sea rescue and everyone else who puts their own life on the line for the sake of others. Thank you.
