Project Information

I cast around for a long while trying to find a better way to store my planes. I had built a saw till, (also included in the first picture) last summer and finally decided that my plane storage should be a companion sized piece. I looked over all kinds of different options but most things seemed so locked into building cubbies for specific size planes and that didn't seem right for me, especially for my woodies.

Eventually the solution it seemed best to go with was the simplest. A shelf. A simple shelf.

I built the shelf to companion with my saw till so it has the same dimensions 40" tall by 30" wide, 9" deep, built from white pine using almost all hand tools. You can catch all the details of the build on my blog by going here.

Thanks for looking.

Looks very nice. I need to build something as well. I have been thinking something with individual spaces for the planes. This looks like a good opiton.

Very nice. I'd do that if i could, but I'm out of wall space.

So I am thinking maybe a wind chime configuration in the corner. ;=)

Yes indeed, they worked out very well - and already full! Guess it's time to start designing version 2.0. But, that's half the fun, isn't it?

This I like! Very cool plane storage, and matching it up to the saw till was a nice touch. Currently have most of my users on shelves near the bench as well. There's a trade-off that involves dust vs. easy access, but it works for me. You work looks great!

Very nice. Like the saw till as well. You have hit on something I have been trying to come up with how to do. Thanks for posting.

I too, have all mine sitting on a shelf but I need a unit similar to this to maximize my space better. Nicely done.

it looks good. I'm struggling trying to figure out where to put mine as well. I just hung the last one I have room for. The one that is in the mail will need some room to.

I really like how you didn't go overboard with spots for each plane. This seems like a good balance of dedicted/flexible space that I hadn't thought of. Good work!
